Overview

Marcy takes visits on weekends and weekday holidays, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, with the last arrival at 2:30 PM and no cap on visits within a day. Before any of that matters, check the DIN. Marcy alternates its weekends between DINs ending 0 to 4 and DINs ending 5 to 9, a whole weekend at a time, so the number decides which dates exist for you at all.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Weekends and weekday holidays, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM
  • 2 Latest arrival 2:30 PM
  • 3 Weekends alternate by DIN last digit, 0 to 4 and 5 to 9
  • 4 A whole weekend goes to one group, Saturday and Sunday together
  • 5 Holidays are open to everyone regardless of DIN
  • 6 No cap on the number of visits in a day
  • 7 Three visitors, plus one child under the age of five
  • 8 The free state visitor bus does not serve Marcy

Which Weekends Are Yours

This is the first thing to settle and almost nowhere publishes it.

Marcy divides its weekends by the last digit of the DIN. The schedule runs two groups, 0 to 4 and 5 to 9, and they alternate. NYSDOCCS puts it plainly: weekend visits are divided by the last digit of the incarcerated individual’s DIN and alternate every weekend.

Two details make this sharper than the same rule elsewhere in New York:

  • A whole weekend goes to one group. Saturday and Sunday are not split between them. If the weekend is yours, both days are yours.
  • Missing yours costs a fortnight. Because the groups alternate weekly, the next weekend available to you is two weeks after the last one, not seven days.

So a family that turns up on the wrong Saturday has not lost a day. They have lost two weeks.

Weekday holidays are the exception. On a holiday the schedule opens to everyone, whatever the DIN.

NYSDOCCS publishes a dated visitation calendar for Marcy on the facility’s own page, revised August 2026, and that document is the authority on which weekends belong to which group.

Hours, and the 2:30 Line

Visits run 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. The latest you can arrive is 2:30 PM.

The half hour between the cutoff and the close is not a late window. Arriving at 2:40 means no visit, even on a weekend that is unambiguously yours.

No Cap on the Day

Once you are inside a day that belongs to your group, Marcy puts no limit on the number of visits.

That is a more open rule than its neighbour runs. Mid-State Correctional Facility, 9005 Old River Road, allows two visits a week and does not ration weekends at all. Two prisons five street numbers apart, two completely different regimes, and a family that has visited one should not assume anything about the other.

Three Visitors, and the Under Fives

Three visitors at a time, plus one child under the age of five, who does not count toward the three.

A child of five or older does count. Three adults and a four year old fits. The same group with a six year old does not.

How a Visit Is Arranged

Nothing needs booking for a regular visit. Under NYSDOCCS rules you can visit during visiting hours with proper photo identification, as long as the person inside agrees to the visit.

On a first visit, staff take your photograph for the visitor identification system and you sign a statement agreeing to the visiting rules. Build a little extra time into the first trip for that.

Some visitors need advance written approval: people on probation or parole, NYSDOCCS staff, volunteers, contract workers, and anyone with past or pending criminal cases.

Children are straightforward. Their own children can visit without written permission where the parent’s name is on the birth certificate. A child under eighteen visiting without a parent or guardian needs the parent’s written permission.

Getting to Marcy

Marcy sits on the edge of Utica, in the Mohawk Valley, which makes it one of the more reachable state prisons in the northern half of New York.

FromApproximate journey
UticaAbout fifteen minutes
SyracuseAbout one hour
AlbanyAbout one and a half hours
New York CityAbout four and a half hours
BuffaloAbout three hours

Set the satnav to 9000 Old River Road. Mid-State is 9005, on the same road, and the street number is the only thing separating two entrances.

The free state visitor bus does not come to Oneida County. It serves 18 prisons and neither Marcy nor Mid-State is among them.

What to Bring

Photo identification for everyone over sixteen, and the visit does not proceed without it.

Phones, bags and electronics stay in the car.

If you are bringing money, the visitor lockbox takes $50 in cash a day in total, however many of you are visiting, and it takes money orders and checks as well.

Between the Weekends You Get

With weekends alternating, most families here see a fortnightly rhythm at best, and a wrong turn on the calendar stretches it to a month.

Calls from every New York state prison have been free since August 2025, and letters and photographs land on the weekends that belong to the other group. Pigeonly sends both from your phone, addressed to P.O. Box 3600 the way Marcy expects, so the off weekends are not silent ones.

Can I visit Marcy Correctional Facility on any weekend?

Q

Are Saturday and Sunday split between the two groups?

No. At Marcy the whole weekend goes to one group, so if the weekend is yours then both days are. That differs from some New York prisons, which give Saturday to one group and Sunday to the other.

Visitation
Q

Three visitors, plus one child under the age of five who does not count toward the three. A child of five or older does count.
