Send Money to Yaphank Correctional Facility

Suffolk caps each deposit at 100 dollars and takes the fee out of that amount rather than adding it on, so what lands is always less than what you paid. Send photos and letters too.

Overview

Suffolk County publishes its deposit rules more clearly than most, with a stated limit, a stated processing time and a stated fee behaviour. The rules are countywide and identical at both jails. What differs between Yaphank and Riverhead is bail, and that difference is worth knowing before you set off at night.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Access Corrections handles deposits, online or on 1-866-345-1884
  • 2 There is a kiosk in the Yaphank visiting lobby
  • 3 It takes cash, credit and debit
  • 4 Deposits are capped at 100 dollars each
  • 5 Funds are available in about 15 minutes
  • 6 The fee comes out of the deposit rather than being added to it
  • 7 Personal cheques are not accepted anywhere
  • 8 Commissary itself is supplied by Keefe Commissary Service

All four are countywide, and the kiosk exists in both jails’ visiting lobbies, so the choice is about convenience rather than which building your person is in.

No personal cheques, by any route.

The Three Numbers Suffolk Does Publish

Most counties leave families guessing at these. Suffolk states them:

  • A 100 dollar limit per deposit. If you need to send more, that is more than one transaction.
  • About 15 minutes before funds are available.
  • The fee reduces the amount deposited. It is taken out of what you sent rather than charged on top, so a 100 dollar deposit puts less than 100 dollars on the books. Work backwards if a specific amount matters.

Bail Is Where the Two Jails Differ

Everything above is identical at Yaphank and Riverhead. Bail is not, and this is the most practically useful difference between the two buildings.

Bonds acceptedNoYes
After 10:30 PMGo to RiverheadOpen

So: Yaphank does not take bail overnight, and does not take bonds at all. If a court sets bail late in the evening, or if what you are posting is a bond rather than cash, Riverhead is the destination regardless of which jail holds your person.

Bail information comes from Central Records on 631-852-2241, which is staffed around the clock.

Commissary Is Keefe, Deposits Are Access Corrections

Two company names appear and families reasonably wonder whether they have the wrong one.

Keefe Commissary Service supplies the commissary itself, the goods your person buys. Access Corrections is the deposit route. They belong to the same corporate group, which is why the names sit alongside each other in county material without explanation.

You deposit through Access Corrections. You do not need to do anything with Keefe.

One further name you may encounter: JPay lists both Suffolk jails on its own site and offers a money transfer product for them. The route Suffolk County itself names and links is Access Corrections, so that is the one this guide leads with.

What Happens to the Money at Release

Suffolk publishes this, and it is worth knowing in advance because the choices narrow once somebody is out.

A remaining balance is loaded onto a prepaid Debit Mastercard. From there:

  • Cashing out at a Mastercard member bank is free.
  • An ACH transfer to a bank account is free.
  • MoneyPass ATMs are surcharge free.
  • Weekly maintenance fees start after a grace period.

That last point is the one that costs people. Money left sitting on the card erodes. Moving it off promptly, by either of the two free routes, is the whole trick.

The county’s own document does not name the card issuer, so we cannot tell you which brand of card arrives.

Confirm the Building First

Confirm which facility holds your person, on 631-852-2241. The deposit follows the person rather than the building, so an online payment is safe either way, but a trip to a lobby kiosk is not.

6 of 8 questions

Q

How do I send money to someone at Yaphank?

Through Access Corrections, online or on 1-866-345-1884, or at the kiosk in the Yaphank visiting lobby, which takes cash, credit and debit. Money orders by post and money handed over at booking are the other two routes. Personal cheques are not accepted by any of them.

Q

What is the cap on a single Suffolk deposit?

Yes, 100 dollars per deposit. Suffolk publishes that figure, along with a processing time of about 15 minutes. Sending more than 100 dollars means more than one transaction, and each one carries its own fee.

Send Money
Q

How long before the money is available?

About 15 minutes, which is quick by county jail standards and one of the few places Suffolk publishes a firm number. That holds for the online, phone and kiosk routes. A money order by post depends on the post.

Send Money
Q

Does the fee get added on top?

No, and this catches people. Suffolk states that the fee reduces the amount deposited, so it comes out of what you sent. A 100 dollar deposit puts less than 100 dollars on the books. If a precise figure matters, work backwards from the fee rather than forwards from the total.

Send Money
Q

Does Yaphank take bail overnight?

Only between 7:00 AM and 10:30 PM, seven days a week, and Yaphank does not accept bonds at all. Riverhead takes bail around the clock and is the only one of the two that accepts bonds. Anything after 10:30 at night, or any bond, goes to Riverhead whichever jail holds your person.

Send Money
Q

Why do I see both Keefe and Access Corrections?

They are two parts of the same corporate group doing two different jobs. Keefe Commissary Service supplies the commissary goods your person buys. Access Corrections is the deposit route you use. You deposit through Access Corrections and never need to deal with Keefe directly.

Send Money
Q

JPay lists this facility. Should I use that instead?

Suffolk County itself names and links Access Corrections, so that is the route this guide leads with. JPay does list both Suffolk jails on its own site with a money transfer product. When a county names one route and a vendor advertises another, following the county's own instruction is the safer choice.

Send Money
Q

What happens to their money when they are released?

The remaining balance goes onto a prepaid Debit Mastercard. Cashing out at a Mastercard member bank is free, an ACH transfer to a bank account is free, and MoneyPass ATMs are surcharge free. Weekly maintenance fees begin after a grace period, so moving the money off the card promptly is worth doing.
