Overview

Suffolk County publishes one visiting schedule covering both of its jails, and it is strictly by appointment. There are two steps and they happen in a fixed order: online registration first, then a phone call to reserve. The registration step is where most people stall, because of what the form asks for.

  • 1 Visits are by appointment only, reserved on 631-852-1893

  • 3 Tuesday to Friday: 2:30, 4:00, 6:45 and 8:15 PM slots
  • 4 Saturday: 8:30 and 10:00 AM, then 1:00 and 2:30 PM
  • 5 No family visiting on Sundays or Mondays
  • 6 Two adult visitors per incarcerated person

  • 8 Attorney visits are non-contact and booked on 631-852-3356

Four Slots a Day, Five Days a Week

Sunday and MondayNo family visiting

Four one hour slots a day, five days a week. The weekday slots are afternoon and evening, which is more workable around a job than many jails manage, and Saturday is the only full day with morning options.

Step One: Guest Registration

Before you can telephone for an appointment, every visitor completes an online Guest Registration form. So do any additional guests, up to two more.

Two things about how it works:

  • One submission per incarcerated person. It is retained for future visits, so this is a one-off rather than something you repeat each time.
  • A separate form for each person you want to visit. If two family members are in custody, that is two registrations.

The Six Digit Number, and Why This Is the Hard Part

The Guest Registration form requires the incarcerated person’s PIN, described by the county as a six digit identification number issued by the Sheriff’s Office.

Suffolk County publishes no inmate roster. There is no search tool, no list, and no page anywhere that will give you that number. So a family trying to register for the first time is asked for something the county offers no public way to obtain.

Two routes, and that is all there are:

  • Ask your person. A letter or a call, before you try to register.
  • Call Central Records on 631-852-2241. Staffed around the clock.

We are spelling this out because it is the single most common place the Suffolk process stops, and nothing on the county’s own page warns you it is coming.

Step Two: The Reservation

Once registered, reservations are made on 631-852-1893.

Two adult visitors per incarcerated person. And a rule that is stricter than it first reads: only those adults who are scheduled for the visit will be allowed on the grounds of the facility. Not merely refused entry to the visiting room. Not allowed onto the property. Somebody who drives you and waits in the car is a problem.

The ID Suffolk Accepts

The county accepts:

  • A valid state driver’s licence or permit
  • A New York DMV non-driver identification card
  • A United States Military ID
  • A foreign passport, in English, with a photograph

If you have none of those, there is an unusual provision worth knowing. The START Resource Center on 631-852-5391 will help a visitor obtain the documents they need. It is not free: the county states the cost falls to the visitor or to the incarcerated person. But the help exists, which is more than most counties offer, and the START centre is physically on the Yaphank grounds.

Taking a Child Into a Visit

  • 18 to visit alone. Under that age, a child needs a parent, a documented legal guardian, or a Parental Acknowledgement Form signed by the incarcerated person.
  • An original birth certificate or court documentation is required for all children. Not a copy.

The Parental Acknowledgement Form is signed inside the jail, by your person, which means arranging it takes a letter or a call first rather than being something you can do at the door.

Attorney Visits Work Differently

Attorney visits are non-contact booth visits, scheduled separately on 631-852-3356. The county describes that line as covering entry to either facility, which is one of the few places its own material acknowledges that two jails exist.

Confirm the Details When You Reserve

The schedule above is countywide, and the county’s visiting page never breaks out hours by facility, so confirm the specifics on 631-852-1893 when you reserve: a dress code, prohibited items, and whether the visit will be contact or non-contact, which changes what to expect at the window.

Aggregator Hours You Will Find, and Should Not Use

Sites ranking well for this facility publish visiting hours of Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM. That is not what the county publishes. The county publishes four one hour slots, Tuesday to Saturday, by appointment. A family working from the aggregator version would arrive on a day with no visiting at all.

Q

What are the visiting hours at Yaphank?

Tuesday to Friday there are four slots: 2:30 to 3:30, 4:00 to 5:00, 6:45 to 7:45 and 8:15 to 9:15 PM. Saturday runs 8:30 to 9:30 AM, 10:00 to 11:00 AM, 1:00 to 2:00 PM and 2:30 to 3:30 PM. There is no family visiting on Sundays or Mondays. All of it is by appointment.

Visitation
Q

What are the two steps to arrange a visit?

Two steps in order. First complete the online Guest Registration form, including for any additional guests. Only then can you telephone 631-852-1893 to reserve a slot. You cannot skip the registration and call, and the form will not submit without the six digit identification number.

Visitation
Q

Where do I get the six digit PIN the form asks for?

From your person, or from Central Records on 631-852-2241. Suffolk County publishes no inmate roster, so there is no public way to look the number up, and nothing on the county's page warns you that the form will ask for it. This is the most common point at which the process stalls.

Visitation
Q

Can someone drive me and wait in the car?

Not on the property. The county's rule is that only the adults scheduled for the visit are allowed on the grounds of the facility, which is stricter than not admitting them to the visiting room. Anyone coming with you needs to be on the reservation and registered.

Visitation
Q

How many adults can be on one reservation?

Two adult visitors per incarcerated person. Any additional guests have to complete Guest Registration in advance as well, and everybody has to be named on the reservation before the day.

Visitation
Q

What identification do visitors need?

A valid state driver's licence or permit, a DMV non-driver identification card, a United States Military ID, or a foreign passport in English with a photograph. If you have none of those, the START Resource Center on 631-852-5391 will help you obtain documents, though the cost falls to you or to the person you are visiting.

Visitation
Q

Can children come to a visit?

Yes, with paperwork. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, a documented legal guardian, or come with a Parental Acknowledgement Form signed by the incarcerated person. An original birth certificate or court documentation is required for all children, not a copy. The form is signed inside the jail, so it takes arranging ahead.

Visitation
Q

Does Suffolk say whether family visits are contact?

Suffolk County does not publish an answer for family visits, which is a real gap. What it does publish is that attorney visits are non-contact booth visits. Ask on 631-852-1893 when you reserve, because it changes what to expect and whether children will understand the arrangement.

Visitation
Q

Has Suffolk published a visiting dress code?

The county publishes none, and no list of items prohibited in the visiting room either. We checked the visiting page including all of its collapsed sections. Since a wasted trip is expensive, it is worth asking when you reserve rather than relying on another site's version of Suffolk's rules.

Visitation
Q

I read that visiting is Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM. Is that right?

No. That figure circulates on directory sites and does not match anything Suffolk County publishes. The county publishes four one hour appointment slots, Tuesday to Saturday, with nothing on Sunday or Monday. Following the directory version would mean arriving on a day with no visiting at all.
