Tarrant County no longer delivers personal mail in paper form at the jail. Letters, cards, and postcards go to an outside scanning service first, then get loaded onto the inmate’s tablet.

Letters must be no larger than 12 inches by 16 inches. Include the inmate’s full legal name and inmate ID number on the envelope. Include your return address. You can track mail delivery and see if letters were approved or rejected by signing up for a free account at mailguardtracker.com.

Label the envelope clearly as legal mail. Legal mail is opened and inspected in the inmate’s presence.

Photos

You can send up to 10 unframed photographs per envelope. Photos must be no larger than 4 inches by 6 inches. Photographs of an obscene nature are not allowed and will be returned. Do not send Polaroid or instant-print photos.

Books and Magazines

Books must be new and shipped directly from an approved publisher. Accepted publishers include Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Macmillan, Bloomsbury, Tyndale, Scholastic, and others. Amazon packages are not accepted because Amazon often uses third-party couriers. Packages from third-party couriers will not be accepted.

Magazines must be a direct subscription from the publisher. You cannot send books or magazines from a personal residence or a retailer like Barnes & Noble.

What Gets Sent Back

Contraband items are returned to sender. Prohibited content includes material depicting violence, obscene material, information about weapons or drugs, and anything that could threaten the safety or security of the facility.
