The BOP register number (format XXXXX-XXX) is essential. Without it, staff may not be able to match the mail to the right person. Find the register number with the BOP inmate locator.

Write your return address clearly on every envelope. The BOP may reject mail with no return address.

What Happens to Your Mail

All incoming mail is opened and inspected for contraband before delivery. Legal mail follows separate BOP rules and is opened in the person’s presence, not read by staff.

Sending Photos

Photo rules at BOP facilities can vary. Call FCI Gilmer at (304) 462-7591 before sending photos to confirm what is currently allowed. In general, standard 4x6 prints are safer than Polaroids, and avoid anything explicit or showing weapons, drugs, or gang content. Write the person’s name and register number lightly on the back of each photo.

What Not to Send

• Cash (use MoneyGram, Western Union, or a money order instead)
• Cards with glitter, stickers, or attached items
• Books or magazines sent directly by you (may need to come from a publisher)
• Anything that could be considered contraband
