Little Sandy Correctional Complex opened in 2005 and was described at the time as Kentucky’s most technologically advanced prison. It holds inmates at multiple custody levels under one roof: a general population compound, a 100-bed Minimum Security Unit, and a 118-bed Special Management Unit. The facility has maintained 100% ACA accreditation in every review cycle since 2007. A Phase II expansion broke ground in November 2022 and began receiving inmates in October 2025, which will eventually raise capacity from about 1,050 to nearly 1,900. Inmates can earn associate, bachelor’s, or even master’s degrees while inside through the facility’s education partnerships.
