Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex opened in February 1990 as part of a two-phase construction project that cost nearly $73 million. It sits on 157 acres in the Appalachian region of Morgan County and received the 1990 AIA Hone Award of Design Excellence from the Kentucky Society of Architects. The main compound holds medium-security inmates, and a separate 90-bed minimum security unit operates outside the fence. EKCC is ACA accredited and offers a wide range of programming, from HVAC and small engine technology to college degrees at the associate and bachelor’s level. The facility employs 360 staff and serves a population of nearly 1,900 people.
