Why There Are No In-Person Visits
Moore County Detention Center runs a fully video-based visitation system. Families sometimes drive to Carthage expecting a sit-down visit through glass and are turned away. Do not make that trip expecting in-person contact. Plan on video instead.
This is not unusual for North Carolina county jails. Video visitation lowers contraband risk and lets families connect from home on a schedule that works for them. If you are nearby, the free on-site kiosks in the lobby are the best option. If you are further away, set up an NCIC account and visit remotely.
On-Site Video Kiosk Visits (Free)
The jail lobby has video kiosk terminals you can use for free.
Hours:
- Monday through Friday: 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Saturday and Sunday: not available
Key details:
- Free to use, no account required for the visitor
- Up to 2 guests per session (a child under 6 counts as a third)
- Walk in during the window, no advance scheduling required
- Bring a valid photo ID
The on-site kiosks are the easiest option if you live in or near Carthage. The session connects you directly to the person inside on a screen in the lobby.
Remote Video Visits from Home
Remote video visits let you connect from a phone, tablet, or computer without going to the jail.
Hours:
- Every day, including Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM
Cost:
- About $0.25 per minute, plus a $2.00 connection fee per session
- A 30-minute visit costs about $7.50 total
How to schedule:
- Go to ncic.com or download the NCIC app.
- Create an account and verify your identity with a photo ID.
- Select North Carolina, then Moore County Detention Center.
- Choose the person you want to visit and pick a date and time.
- Add funds to your account to cover the visit cost.
- Schedule the visit at least 24 hours before the session.
The person inside must also accept the visit request. If they do not accept, the session will not connect.
Visit Frequency
Each person in custody is allowed up to 2 video visits per week. Coordinate with them so you use those sessions well. If you want to stay connected between visits, see the phone calls guide for how NCIC calling works.
Guest Limits
On-site kiosk visits allow up to 2 guests per session, with a third allowed if the additional guest is a child under 6.
Remote visits through NCIC are conducted through your personal device or account. Check the NCIC platform for any guest limits on remote sessions if you want multiple people viewing together.
Children and Minors
Children can participate in video visits. For on-site visits, they must be accompanied by an adult. There are no age minimums for video-based visits, but you are responsible for keeping children calm and appropriate on camera during the session.
If a minor is visiting alone through a remote session, they need to be on an account managed by a parent or guardian.
What to Expect During the Visit
Video visits are monitored. Keep the conversation appropriate. The session records what is said and what appears on camera.
At the kiosk, you sit or stand at the terminal in the jail lobby and speak through the screen. The person inside is in a designated area on their end.
For remote visits, the connection goes through the NCIC platform on your device. Make sure your camera and microphone are working before the session starts.
If a Visit Doesn’t Connect
For remote visits, technical issues sometimes cause sessions to fail. If the visit drops or does not connect:
- Check the NCIC app or ncic.com for session status
- Call NCIC support at 800-943-2189
- NCIC’s refund or reschedule policy applies for failed connections
For on-site kiosk issues, ask lobby staff for help during your visit window.
What’s Not Allowed
- No passing items to or receiving items from the person during a video visit
- No inappropriate or sexual content on camera
- No coaching someone about their case, charges, or court proceedings
- Any session that violates these rules can be terminated immediately
Repeated violations can result in the person losing visitation privileges.
Accessibility and Medical Accommodations
If you have a disability or medical condition that makes it difficult to use the on-site kiosks, remote video visits are a practical alternative. Contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 947-2980 to ask about accommodations for in-lobby visits.
