Overview
The NC Department of Adult Correction operates a free public search called the Offender Public Information (OPI) tool. You can use it to confirm someone is at Piedmont Correctional Institution and get their OPUS Number, which you will need for money deposits, mail, and the visitor application. The search is at webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view.
Quick Facts
Search tool: NC DAC Offender Public Information (OPI) at webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view.
Search by first name, last name, or OPUS Number.
Results show current facility, custody level, sentence info, and the OPUS Number.
The OPUS Number is required for money deposits, mail, and visitor applications.
Piedmont CI is a reception facility. Someone may be there temporarily before moving.
If a person does not appear, they may not yet be processed into the system or may have transferred.
Call (980) 407-6300 for help if the search does not find the person you are looking for.
Enter the person’s first name and last name, or their OPUS Number if you have it.
Click Search.
Review the list of results and click the name that matches.
The profile page shows their current facility, custody level, sentence information, and OPUS Number.
Write down the OPUS Number. You will need it for every money deposit, piece of mail, and the visitor application form.
What Information the Search Returns
When you find the right person, the OPI profile shows:
Current facility: confirms they are at Piedmont CI or shows a different location if they transferred
Custody level: medium or minimum at Piedmont
Offense information: the conviction that led to the sentence
Sentence dates: projected release or parole eligibility information
OPUS Number: the unique identifier used across NC DAC systems
The OPI does not show a phone number, commissary balance, or call history.
Why Someone Might Not Appear
If a search returns no results or the wrong result, a few things could explain it:
Newly arrived or recently transferred. Piedmont CI is a reception and diagnostic facility. People newly sentenced from western NC often arrive here first. There can be a delay of 1 to 3 days between arrival and the record appearing in OPI.
Transferred to another facility. The OPI updates when someone moves. If you last knew them to be at Piedmont but the record now shows a different facility, they have been transferred. The new facility name will appear in the profile.
Name spelling. Try alternate spellings or a partial name search. A legal name in the system may differ from a preferred name.
Not yet sentenced. OPI covers sentenced state prison inmates. If the person is still in a county jail awaiting trial or sentencing, they will not appear in NC DAC records.
Released. If the sentence ended, the person may no longer appear in an active search. Some records remain visible for a period after release.
If none of these explain the result, call Piedmont CI directly at (980) 407-6300.
Confirming Before You Visit or Send Money
Always run the OPI search before traveling to Piedmont for a visit or before sending a money deposit. People at Piedmont CI may be there for a short time for intake processing, medical evaluations, or dental work before transferring to a different facility. Confirming their current location first saves you a trip or a delayed deposit.
You can also search for someone at Piedmont CI through Pigeonly at pigeon.ly/search. Pigeonly pulls from multiple sources and can help confirm a location or pull up an OPUS Number.
Daily Roster vs. Continuous Record
NC DAC OPI is a continuously updated database, not a daily roster. Records typically update within 1 to 3 days of a new arrival, transfer, or release. If someone arrived at Piedmont within the last day or two, check again before calling the facility.
