Getting on the Approved Visitor List
You cannot schedule a visit until you are on the person’s approved visitor list. Here is how enrollment works:
- The person inside requests blank visitor application forms from the facility.
- They mail the blank form to you.
- You complete the form and return it to Piedmont Correctional Institution.
- If you are 16 or older, attach a copy of a valid photo ID.
- If you are under 16, attach a copy of your birth certificate.
- The facility reviews and approves or denies the application.
The visitor list opens for enrollment every 6 months. A person can have up to 18 approved visitors on their list. If the list is full, you will need to wait for a spot to open.
Not sure if you are already on the list? Call (980) 407-6300 to confirm your status before scheduling.
How to Schedule a Visit
Once you are on the approved list, contact Piedmont CI to schedule your appointment:
Schedule at least 7 to 14 days before the date you want to visit. Visiting hours are not posted on the NC DAC website. The scheduling office will confirm your session time when you call or reply to your email.
Facility Location and Directions
Piedmont Correctional Institution is at 1245 Camp Road, Salisbury, NC 28147, in Rowan County. The facility sits on a 52-acre campus about 5 miles east of downtown Salisbury off Interstate 85.
Salisbury is served by Rowan County Transit for local routes. If you are coming from a distance, several hotels are available in the Salisbury area. Call (980) 407-6300 if you need directions or parking information.
What to Bring
- Valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) for anyone 16 or older
- Birth certificates for children under 16
- No cell phones, no smartwatches, no cameras, no AI-enabled glasses
Lockers or storage may be available for items not permitted inside. Confirm with the facility before your visit.
Dress Code
Piedmont CI enforces a dress code for all visitors. Wearing prohibited clothing can result in your visit being turned away. What is not allowed:
- Halter tops, tube tops, strapless tops, or tank tops
- Bare midriff clothing or see-through fabric
- Fishnet clothing
- Shorts, skirts, or dresses more than 3 inches above the kneecap
- Wave caps, doo rags, or bandanas
- Spandex or form-fitting stretch clothing
- Pants worn below the waist
- Clothing displaying gang or Security Threat Group (STG) symbols
- Clothing with profane or offensive language or images
When in doubt, dress conservatively. Solid-color clothing that covers your shoulders and knees is always a safe choice.
Security Screening
All visitors go through security screening before entering the visitation area:
- Metal detector: everyone passes through
- Pat search: applies to all visitors 16 and older
- Prohibited items: cell phones, smartwatches, cameras, and AI-enabled glasses must be left outside or in a vehicle
Do not bring anything you would not want searched. If a prohibited item is found, your visit may be denied.
Visiting with Children
Children under 16 must have a copy of their birth certificate presented at entry. Children must also be on the person’s approved visitor list. A supervising adult must accompany any minor during the visit and is responsible for the child’s behavior throughout.
If a minor is not the visitor’s own child, contact the facility in advance to confirm any additional documentation that may be required, such as a notarized permission letter from the parent or guardian.
Attorney and Legal Visits
Attorney visits are handled separately from personal visits and typically do not require a prior appointment under normal circumstances. Attorneys should contact Piedmont CI directly at (980) 407-6300 to confirm scheduling and access procedures. Legal mail does not go through the TextBehind system. See the mail and photos guide for more on sending legal correspondence.
Clergy Visits
Approved clergy members may arrange pastoral visits outside of regular visiting hours. Contact the facility chaplain’s office through the main number at (980) 407-6300 for scheduling and access procedures.
If Your Visit Is Terminated Early
Staff can end a visit early if a visitor or the person inside violates facility rules. Reasons can include physical contact beyond what is permitted, passing items, causing a disturbance, or other violations. If a visit is terminated, you may be subject to a suspension from future visits. Follow all posted and verbal instructions from staff throughout your session.
Video Visits as an Alternative
If you cannot make it to Salisbury, video visits are available through the Getting Out Visits app. Download the app from GettingOut.com, create a free account, and schedule a video session directly with the person inside. Video visits let you connect from home without traveling.
What Happens If You Arrive Late
If you arrive after your scheduled appointment window, your visit may be shortened or rescheduled. Contact the facility in advance at (980) 407-6300 if you expect to be late so staff can advise on your options.
Holiday and Schedule Changes
Visiting hours can change around holidays. Always call (980) 407-6300 or email [email protected] before a holiday visit to confirm your session is still on.
