Two Different Addresses: Which to Use
Randolph County Detention Center uses two separate addresses for mail. Using the wrong one will delay or lose the letter.
Personal Letters and Cards
Personal letters, cards, and any non-legal correspondence go to the scan-and-forward processing address:
[Inmate Full Name, Inmate ID#]
Randolph County Detention Center
Facility ID Number 5165
PO Box 18247
Greensboro, NC 27419
Include all three identifying pieces on the address: the person’s full legal name, their inmate ID number, and Facility ID Number 5165. Missing any one of these can result in the mail being delayed or returned.
Books, Legal Mail, and Subscriptions
Books, legal mail (attorney letters, court documents), and magazine or newspaper subscriptions go directly to the facility’s physical address:
[Inmate Full Name, Inmate ID#]
Randolph County Detention Center
811 New Century Drive
Asheboro, NC 27205
How the Scan-and-Forward System Works
When your personal letter arrives at the Greensboro PO Box, a mail processing service scans it digitally. The physical letter is then destroyed. The inmate receives a digital copy to read on a tablet or display inside the facility.
What this means for you:
- The person will not receive the original paper letter.
- Do not send items you expect to be returned (photos you want back, important documents, etc.).
- The scanning process adds some processing time before the person can read your message.
Return Address Requirement
Your return address must include your full first and last name. Do not use initials only, a nickname, or just a street address. Mail without a proper full-name return address may be rejected before it’s scanned.
Page Limits and Writing Rules
| Item | Limit |
|---|
| Pages per envelope | 10 maximum |
| Paper size | 8.5” x 11” only |
| Ink color | Blue or black ink only |
Do not use pencil, red pen, or other ink colors. Write on standard copy paper or notebook paper. Cards are allowed within the 10-page limit if they don’t contain prohibited elements.
Books
Books must meet all of the following conditions:
- Paperback only. Hardcover books are not accepted.
- Maximum 3 books at a time.
- Must come directly from an authorized retailer or publisher, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or the publisher’s own website. Books sent by individuals from home are not accepted.
- No books with violent content, sexually explicit material, or pornographic content.
- No book pages sent separately inside letters.
Order books from a retailer and ship them directly to the physical address at 811 New Century Drive, Asheboro, NC 27205. Include the inmate’s full name and inmate ID on the shipping label.
Newspapers and Magazines
Newspapers and magazines must come directly from the publisher by subscription. Send them to the physical address at 811 New Century Drive, Asheboro, NC 27205. Single issues sent by individuals are not accepted. Do not include clippings from newspapers or magazines inside personal letters.
What Is Not Allowed in Mail
The following items will cause mail to be rejected:
- Pencil writing or any ink color other than blue or black
- Glitter, glue, tape, stickers, or any adhesive elements
- 3D or raised designs, puffy elements
- Newspaper clippings or magazine pages inside a personal letter
- Book pages torn out and included in a letter
- Explicit, violent, or sexually suggestive content
- Drug or alcohol imagery
- Gang symbols or references
- Cash, checks, or money orders (use JailATM at deposits.jailatm.com instead)
- Originals of important documents such as birth certificates, IDs, or court orders
What Happens to Your Mail
Every personal letter sent to the PO Box is opened and scanned. The original is destroyed after scanning. The inmate gets a digital copy. Legal mail sent to the physical address is handled differently and may be opened in front of the detainee to protect attorney-client privilege.
Mail that fails to meet the facility’s rules will be rejected. You may receive a rejection notice, but do not send original items you expect to get back.
Getting the Inmate ID Number
You need the inmate ID number for every letter you send to the PO Box. The ID goes on the address line along with Facility ID Number 5165. The inmate ID is not shown on the public roster. Call (336) 318-6625 to ask staff for it. See the inmate search guide for more details.
What to Do If Mail Doesn’t Arrive
If the person hasn’t received a letter you sent:
- Check that you used the correct address: PO Box 18247 in Greensboro for personal letters, not the Asheboro address.
- Check that you included the inmate ID and Facility ID Number 5165.
- Check that your return address included your full first and last name.
- Remember that scanning adds processing time. Allow at least 7-10 days.
- Call (336) 318-6625 to ask whether mail was received or rejected.
Sending Important Documents
Do not mail originals of important documents. The scan-and-forward system destroys originals. If you must send a copy of a document, use certified mail with tracking, and keep the original yourself.
Send Photos and Letters with Pigeonly
The easiest way to send photos and letters to someone at Randolph County Detention Center is through Pigeonly. Upload your photos or write your letter online, and Pigeonly prints and mails everything to the facility for you, following the mail rules listed above.
