The Envelope, Line by Line
Oneida County Correctional Facility, NYJohn Smith, #11111PO BOX 807Syracuse, NY 13201
That is the county’s own worked example, copied from the notice on its Mail and Money Order page.
Use the full official name. The county asks for the complete facility name with no abbreviations, and its example spells out Oneida County Correctional Facility. Most people know this place as the Oneida County Jail, and that is what it is, but the envelope wants the formal name. The box in Syracuse serves several New York jails and the name is what routes your letter to the right one.
The Warning Other Counties Do Not Give
Oneida says something we have not seen any other New York jail put in writing:
Any mail without this address format will be refused by the US Postal Service and returned to the sender.
Not held. Not opened and checked. Refused and sent back. That is why this page leads with the format before the rules.
The county also states that all mail must be sent to the Digital Mail Center for processing, which is what the Syracuse box is.
Where Your Letter Ends Up
Personal mail is scanned and delivered digitally. Letters, pictures and drawings reach your person through the Facility Messages app on their tablet, under the free profile.
So they read it on a screen. If you were sending a drawing for them to keep, what arrives is an image of it.
Five Things That Have to Be on the Envelope
The county lists these, and any one of them missing is what triggers the refusal:
The complete facility name, no abbreviations, and the state
The inmate’s full name and booking number
The sender’s full name and physical address
Only personal mail, meaning letters, pictures and drawings
Everything else follows the facility’s own guidelines instead
What the Syracuse Box Will Not Take
Cheques, money orders and attorney-client privileged mail are excluded. Those follow the jail’s own guidelines instead of going to the scanning box.
That matters more at Oneida than most, because the county has a strict money order rule of its own: only United States Postal money orders are accepted, and money orders from any other source are returned to the sender. A postal money order sent to a scanning centre helps nobody.
If a Letter Goes Missing
Mail delivery problems go to the Mail Scan support desk run by ViaPath Technologies, at [email protected], which is the address the notice publishes.
That is the vendor, not the county, so it is the right place for a letter that was addressed correctly and never appeared. Questions about whether something was allowed in are still for the jail.
Photos, and What Actually Arrives
Pictures and drawings are named as acceptable personal mail, so they are allowed. They reach your person the same way a letter does, as an image on the tablet rather than a print to keep in a cell.
Sending From Home
The format is the whole game here, and it is the part that is easy to get wrong at a kitchen table. Pigeonly prints and posts letters and photos to the Syracuse box with the full facility name, the state and the booking number already in place, in the layout the mail centre expects.

Q
What happens if I get the format wrong?
The county states that mail without its address format will be refused by the US Postal Service and returned to the sender. Not held, not opened and checked. Sent back. That is why the format is worth getting right the first time.
Mail & Photos
Q
Should I write Oneida County Jail or Oneida County Correctional Facility?
The correctional facility version. The county asks for the complete facility name with no abbreviations, and its own example spells out Oneida County Correctional Facility. The Syracuse box serves several jails, so the name is what routes your letter.
Mail & Photos
Q
Do they get the paper letter?
No. Personal mail is scanned and delivered to your person through the Facility Messages app on their tablet, under the free profile. They read it on a screen instead of holding it, so a drawing you send arrives as an image of the drawing.
Mail & Photos
Q
Can I post a money order?
Not to the Syracuse box, which excludes cheques, money orders and legal mail. And be careful generally here: Oneida accepts only United States Postal money orders, and money orders from any other source are returned to the sender.

Q
Can I send photos?
Yes. Pictures and drawings are named as acceptable personal mail. They arrive on the tablet as an image, the same way a letter does.

Q
What do I do if a letter never arrives?
Contact ViaPath Mail Scan support at [email protected], which is the route the county's notice publishes for mail delivery problems. That is the vendor handling the scanning, not the jail.
