Overview

Oneida County splits money into three separate things that do not touch each other: commissary funds, phone credit, and bail. Each has its own route, and the route that looks most like an online deposit page is the one that does not reach a commissary account at all.

Quick Facts

  • 1 United States Postal money orders are the only kind accepted
  • 2 Any other money order is returned to the sender
  • 3 Care packages run through mycarepack.com on 1-866-394-0490
  • 4 Phone credit runs through AdvancePay, a separate account
  • 5 The county's online payment page handles bail and civil fees only
  • 6 Cash bail uses payment code 1991
  • 7 Civil fees use payment code 8169

Postal Money Orders, and Nothing Else

The county’s rule is short and it has no exceptions in it: only United States Postal money orders are accepted, and money orders from any other source are returned to the sender.

That rules out the ones sold at supermarkets, convenience stores and cheque cashing shops. It has to come from a Post Office.

Do not post it to the Syracuse mail box. That box is a scanning centre for personal mail, and the county’s mail notice says money orders follow the jail’s own guidelines instead. The Jail Records Office is on 315-768-7804.

The money order also needs the person’s name and booking number written correctly to be credited.

Care Packages

Commissary care packages run through a named vendor, published on the Sheriff’s own visiting information sheet:

  • mycarepack.com
  • 1-866-394-0490

This is a separate thing from putting cash on an account. You are ordering specific goods that get delivered to them, rather than giving them money to spend.

Phone Credit Is Its Own Account

Money for phone calls does not come out of a commissary balance. It sits in an AdvancePay account that you open and fund on your side, through ConnectNetwork, which is operated by ViaPath Technologies.

The phone guide covers setting that up. The thing to carry over here is that funding one does not fund the other. Families regularly put money on commissary and then wonder why the calls have stopped.

The Payment Page That Is Not a Deposit Page

This is the trap at Oneida, and it is an easy one to fall into.

The Sheriff’s site has a page called Pay Bill and Fees Online. It looks exactly like where you would deposit money. It is not. It handles bail and civil fees, through GovPayNet, and nothing paid through it reaches a commissary account.

There is also a phone route on 1-877-EZBAIL5.

Two codes, one digit different in length, entirely different destinations. Check which one you need before paying, and if you are trying to put money on someone’s account, this page is not the one you want.

Q

What kind of money order does the Oneida County jail accept?

United States Postal money orders only. The county states that money orders from any other source are returned to the sender, which rules out the ones sold in supermarkets, convenience stores and cheque cashing shops. It has to be bought at a Post Office.

Q

Where do I post the money order?

Not to PO Box 807 in Syracuse. That box takes personal mail only, and the county's mail notice says money orders follow the jail's own guidelines instead. The Jail Records Office is on 315-768-7804.

Q

Can I deposit money online?

Not to a commissary account. The page on its site called Pay Bill and Fees Online handles bail and civil fees through GovPayNet, and nothing paid there reaches a commissary balance. Phone credit is separate again, through AdvancePay.

Q

What is the difference between payment codes 1991 and 8169?

1991 is cash bail and 8169 is civil fees, both on the county's GovPayNet portal, with a phone route on 1-877-EZBAIL5. They are entirely different destinations, so check which one applies before paying. Neither of them puts money on a commissary account.

Q

How do I send a care package?

Through mycarepack.com, or on 1-866-394-0490, both published on the Sheriff's own visiting information sheet. That is ordering specific goods for delivery rather than giving them money to spend, so it works differently from a deposit and is worth considering if you want to know exactly what arrives.

Q

I put money on commissary but the calls stopped. Why?

Because they are two separate accounts. Phone credit sits in an AdvancePay account that you fund on your side through ConnectNetwork, operated by ViaPath Technologies, and it is not connected to the commissary balance. Funding one does nothing for the other, and this catches out a lot of families.
