What You Need to Know

Oneida County Sheriff's Office: Inmate List See our sources ›

The Sheriff's Office publishes everyone currently in custody as a table rather than a search tool, and it says itself that the data refreshes about every six hours. You browse it and expand a row with the plus sign. That six hour figure is the single most useful thing on the page, because it explains why somebody booked this morning is not showing yet.

Oneida County Sheriff's Office: Visitation See our sources ›

Ten session times across Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, an hour each, two a week. There is no application to file and no visitor list to join, which is rare in New York and genuinely good news for a family in a hurry. The trade is that everything is first come first served and registration closes 15 minutes before the session starts.

Personal mail goes to a digital mail centre in Syracuse and reaches your person as a scan on their tablet. The county is unusually strict about the envelope, warning that mail in the wrong format is refused by the Postal Service and returned to the sender.

Only United States Postal money orders are accepted, and any other kind is returned to the sender. Care packages run through a named vendor. The trap is the county's online payment page, which looks like a deposit route and is not: it handles bail and civil fees, under two different payment codes, and nothing on it reaches a commissary account.

Phone runs through ViaPath Technologies, with an AdvancePay account on the family's side, and the tablets run GettingOut from the same parent company. Video visits go through the tablet system too.

6 of 8 questions

Q

What are the visiting hours at Oneida County Jail?

Tuesday and Thursday sessions start at 7:30, 8:45, 10:15, 12:00 and 1:30. Wednesday sessions start at 10:30, 12:15, 1:30, 3:30 and 4:45. Each visit lasts an hour and you get two a week. There is no Monday, Friday or weekend visiting at all.

Visitation
Q

Do I need to apply before visiting?

No, and that makes Oneida unusual. There is no visitor application, no form number, no approved visitor list and no background check to clear first. Visits run first come, first served. What you do need is to be in the lobby registering 15 minutes before the session starts.

Visitation
Q

Does Oneida County have an online inmate search?

It publishes a live in-custody list, which is not quite the same thing. There is no search box on it. You browse the table, which shows name, sex, race, age, booking date and charges, and click the plus sign next to a row for more detail. The county says it updates about every six hours.

Inmate Search
Q

Why can I not find someone who was arrested today?

Two likely reasons. Booking has to finish before a record exists at all, which takes hours rather than minutes. On top of that the list refreshes roughly every six hours, so there is a lag even after booking completes. The Jail Records Office on 315-768-7804 can answer before the list catches up.

Inmate Search
Q

Is the jail in Oriskany or Whitestown?

Both answers are right, which is why this confuses people. The mailing address is Oriskany, NY 13424, but the building physically sits in the Town of Whitestown, about three miles southwest of Oriskany village. The county says plainly that its mailing addresses are different from where the buildings actually are.

Visitation
Q

What is the difference between 6065 and 6075 Judd Road?

They are two buildings on one Public Safety Complex. The Correctional Facility is 6075. Administration and Law Enforcement are 6065. If you are visiting someone in custody you want 6075, and turning up at 6065 sends you to the wrong building on a schedule that does not wait.

Visitation
Q

How many people does the jail hold?

It has 634 beds. The current facility opened in June 1998 after a reconstruction costing about 30 million dollars, replacing a 1965 building that had 164 cells. The Corrections Division was accredited by the New York State Sheriffs' Association in 2019.

Visitation
Q

Where do I send a letter?

To PO Box 807, Syracuse, NY 13201, with Oneida County Correctional Facility, NY on the first line and their full name and booking number on the second. Use the full official name rather than Oneida County Jail, because the county asks for no abbreviations.
