Phone Calls at the Oneida County Jail

Phone credit at Oneida sits in an account you open and fund yourself, entirely separate from the commissary balance, which is why calls can stop while there is money on the books. Create your phone account in minutes.

Overview

Oneida County runs phone, tablets and video through one parent company under three different product names, which is why the information families find online looks inconsistent. Untangling which name does what is most of the work.

Quick Facts

  • 1 Phone service is provided by ViaPath Technologies
  • 2 The family side account is AdvancePay, through ConnectNetwork
  • 3 The Sheriff's own sheet prints gtl.com and 1-866-516-0115
  • 4 Tablets and messaging run on GettingOut, same parent company
  • 5 Video visits also run through the tablet system
  • 6 Phone money is separate from the commissary balance
  • 7 Jail Records answers on 315-768-7804

One Company, Three Names

Every phone and tablet product at this jail comes from the same parent, and knowing that saves a lot of confusion.

Name you will seeWhat it is
ViaPath TechnologiesThe parent company, formerly Global Tel Link
AdvancePayThe prepaid account you open to receive calls
ConnectNetworkThe website where you manage that account
GettingOutThe tablet, messaging and video product

The Sheriff’s own visiting information sheet still prints gtl.com and 1-866-516-0115 under its phone heading. That is the pre-2022 name for the same company, not a different vendor.

Setting Up an Account

Calls come out of the jail collect, so the account lives on your side and has to have money on it before anything connects.

  • Open an AdvancePay account through ConnectNetwork
  • Or set it up by phone on 1-866-516-0115

Once funded, calls from your person can connect to that number.

This Is Not the Commissary Account

Worth repeating because it is the most common mistake families make here.

Money you put on commissary buys them goods from the jail store. Money you put on AdvancePay pays for calls to your phone. They are two separate balances in two separate systems, and funding one does nothing for the other.

If calls have stopped and you know there is money on the books, the AdvancePay balance is the first thing to check. The money guide covers the commissary side.

Tablets, Messaging and Video

Oneida uses GettingOut for tablet services, which covers messaging, and video visits run through the same system.

Video is a real alternative here rather than an afterthought, because in person visiting at this jail is narrow: three days a week, ten session times, two visits, and a 15 minute registration deadline that ends the trip if you miss it. A family two hours away may get more contact out of the tablet than out of the drive.

You will want the GettingOut account set up before you need it rather than on the day.

Where to Find the Rate

ViaPath shows rates once you select this facility while setting up an account, and 1-866-516-0115 quotes them over the phone.

Calls Only Go Outward

You cannot call in and ask to speak to somebody. Calls go from the jail to a number you have funded, and that is the only direction.

For something genuinely urgent, such as a death in the family, Jail Records on 315-768-7804 is the line to call so a message can be passed.

Before the First Call Comes

Two practical things:

  1. Make sure your number can receive the call. Some mobile carriers and most voice over internet numbers block collect calls by default, and the call fails on your end rather than theirs.
  2. Check they are still here. The in-custody list refreshes about every six hours, so confirm before spending money on an account.

6 of 7 questions

Q

Who provides the phones at the Oneida County jail?

ViaPath Technologies, which was called Global Tel Link until 2022. The Sheriff's own visiting sheet still prints gtl.com and 1-866-516-0115, which is the same company under its old name rather than a different vendor. The account you open is called AdvancePay and you manage it through ConnectNetwork.

Phone Calls
Q

How do I set up an account to receive calls?

Open an AdvancePay account through ConnectNetwork, or set one up by phone on 1-866-516-0115. Calls come out of the jail collect, so the account sits on your side and has to be funded before anything connects.

Phone Calls
Q

I put money on their books but the calls stopped. Why?

Because commissary and phone are two separate balances. Commissary money buys goods from the jail store. Phone calls are paid from your AdvancePay account, which you fund yourself. Funding one does nothing for the other, and this is the single most common mistake families make at this jail.

Phone Calls
Q

What do calls cost per minute?

ViaPath quotes the rate once you select this facility while setting up an account, and 1-866-516-0115 will tell you over the phone.

Phone Calls
Q

Can I call the jail and ask to speak to them?

No. Calls only go outward, from the jail to a number you have funded. For an emergency such as a death in the family, call Jail Records on 315-768-7804 and a message can be passed through.

Phone Calls
Q

Are there video visits?

Yes, through GettingOut, which is the same tablet system used for messaging and comes from the same parent company as the phones. Given how narrow in person visiting is here, three days a week with a 15 minute registration deadline, video is worth setting up properly rather than treating as a backup.

Phone Calls
Q

Why do calls keep failing on my phone?

Often the number itself. Many mobile carriers and most voice over internet numbers block collect calls by default, so the call fails on your end rather than at the jail. A landline or a number registered directly with AdvancePay is more reliable.
