This is the single most useful thing to know about finding someone in Onondaga County.
Everyone arrested in the county is booked at the Justice Center in downtown Syracuse. People who go on to serve a sentence generally move out to the Onondaga County Correctional Facility in Jamesville, about seven miles away.
Both tools live on the same county server and look almost identical. They are not the same list.
| Justice Center | Jamesville |
|---|
| Where | 555 South State Street, Syracuse | 6660 East Seneca Turnpike, Jamesville |
| Phone | 315-435-1770 | 315-435-5581 |
| Tool path | /InmateLookup/app/Sheriff/ | /InmateLookup/app/Corrections/ |
If the Justice Center search comes back empty and you are confident about the name, the Jamesville tool is the next place to look, not the last.
What a Result Actually Shows
Each row carries eleven fields, which is a lot for a county tool:
| Field | What it is for |
|---|
| Name | Surname first. Clicking it opens release notification signup |
| ICN | The Inmate Control Number, needed for deposits and phone |
| Age | As recorded at booking |
| Cell | The housing location, like 4C-19 or 5BSH3 |
| Att/Offense/Seq | The charge and its sequence number |
| Court Name | City Criminal, for example |
| Court Date | The next scheduled appearance |
| Arresting Agency | Syracuse PD, Sheriff’s Office and so on |
| Bond | The bond figure |
| Cash Bail | The cash figure, which is usually lower |
| Bail Remarks | A reference number where one applies |
Someone with several charges gets several lines, one per charge.
The Cell Number Tells You When You Can Visit
This is the connection nobody spells out, and it saves a wasted drive.
Visiting at the Justice Center rotates by floor, and the Cell field in the search result is where that floor is written, its first character. Run the search, read the cell, then check which of the five daily rounds it qualifies you for on the visiting guide, which has the full schedule.
Write Down the Control Number
The ICN column is the number that unlocks everything else.
- Money through smartdeposit.com asks for it, along with the facility code SYR.
- Phone access needs it. Your person cannot dial at all without their control number and a four digit code.
- Mail should carry it on the envelope.
Their own copy is printed on the wristband they were given at booking, but they may not have it to hand when they call. Having it written down on your side is worth doing the first time you run the search.
There Are No Booking Photos
Searches for Onondaga County mugshots turn up a great many sites promising them. The county’s own tool shows none.
We checked the live results directly. The eleven columns above are the whole record, and there is no photo column and no thumbnail. Booking photographs are taken as part of intake, but they do not appear in the public tool.
The sites that do show them are commercial operations working from scraped or purchased records, and their data is often out of date in a way the county’s is not.
Release Notification Is Built In
Clicking a person’s name in the results does not open a profile. It opens registration for the Victim Information and Notification Everyday programme, known as VINE, which will tell you by phone or email when that person is released.
The county states this on the search page itself. It is worth knowing so that clicking a name does not feel like a broken link.
When the Search Comes Back Empty
Work through these in order:
- Booking may not be finished. It takes hours, not minutes, and there is no record anywhere until it completes.
- Try fewer letters. The box matches on last name. A hyphen dropped or a middle name attached at booking will stop an exact match, so try the first few letters or use the A to Z browse.
- Try the Jamesville tool. If they have been sentenced, they are probably no longer in Syracuse.
- Call 315-435-1770. The Justice Center line is answered, and the Custody Administration office is on 315-435-1709.
What the County Says About Its Own Data
The search page carries a disclaimer worth reading once, because it explains who is in the list:
The people listed may be awaiting trial and therefore not convicted, convicted but awaiting sentencing, sentenced but awaiting transport to another facility, or being held for another jurisdiction.
That last category matters at the Justice Center, because it holds people for federal and state authorities as well as for Onondaga County. Someone being held for another jurisdiction can move on a timetable the county does not set.
