More than three in five people (62%) sentenced to state prison have been convicted of a violent crime.

As of 2021, there were approximately 115,000 inmates in privately owned facilities, accounting for approximately 8% of the total number of incarcerated Americans.

46% of prisoners in federal prison are there for drug related crimes.

The United States currently detains 1,120,973 male and 83,349 female prisoners.

According to the latest available data at the World Prison Brief on May 7, 2023, the United States has the sixth highest incarceration rate in the world, at 531 people per 100,000; and the largest prison and jail population in the world.

The largest percentage of inmates (16.3%) falls within the 30-34- year-old age bracket.

Across 32 states and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, As of January 1, 2023, there were 2,331 death row inmates in the United States.
