Important: Confirm the Facility Address Before You Go
A new consolidated 460-bed Justice Center was planned to open in Shelby in 2025 or 2026. As of the time this guide was verified, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office website still listed both 407 McBrayer Street and 100 Justice Place as active locations. The situation may have changed.
Before traveling for a visit, call (704) 669-3001 to confirm:
- Which building is currently accepting visitors
- Whether appointment scheduling is required or walk-in visits are accepted
- Any schedule changes around holidays
Do not assume either address is correct without calling first.

Who Can Visit
Anyone on the inmate’s approved visitor list may visit. The facility controls the visitor approval process. If you have never visited before, call (704) 669-3001 to ask about the visitor registration process and whether you need to be pre-approved before coming in.
Guest limit: 2 guests per visit.
Children: Unconfirmed whether minors require a notarized permission form from a non-attending parent. Call (704) 669-3001 to ask about the rules for bringing children.
What to Bring
Bring only what you need. Leave everything else in your vehicle.
Required:
- Valid government-issued photo ID for all adult visitors. Acceptable forms include a driver’s license, state ID, U.S. passport, or U.S. military ID. Social Security cards and insurance cards are not valid ID.
Do not bring into the facility:
- Cell phones
- Purses or bags
- Watches or jewelry
- Food or drinks
- Any items intended for the inmate
Dress Code
Professional, non-revealing clothing is required for all visitors. Visits may be denied or terminated if you do not meet the dress code. Do not wear:
- Shorts
- Sleeveless tops or tank tops
- See-through or sheer clothing
- Low-cut tops
- Tops that expose skin between the shirt and waistband when arms are raised
- Tight or form-fitting clothing
- Headwear (hats, caps, hoods)
- Clothing with offensive graphics or language
Dress as you would for a professional appointment. When in doubt, choose conservative clothing that covers your shoulders, arms, and legs to at least the knee.
Security Screening
All visitors pass through security before entering the visitation area. Expect:
- Magnetometer screening
- Possible pat search
- Possible x-ray of personal items
Visitors who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs will not be permitted to visit.
Conduct During the Visit
Visits may be terminated early for any of the following:
- Disruptive or disrespectful behavior
- Attempting to pass items to or from the inmate
- Violating facility rules
All visitation areas are monitored. Do not attempt to give anything to the inmate or accept anything from them during the visit.
Contraband
It is a crime to bring drugs, alcohol, or weapons onto county detention property. Attempting to introduce contraband into the facility can result in arrest and prosecution. This applies to the parking lot and all common areas, not just inside the visiting room.
Video Visitation
Securus Technologies is the phone and communications provider at Cleveland County Detention Center. Video visitation through Securus may be available. Call (704) 669-3001 or check securustech.online to find out whether remote video visits are currently offered and how to schedule one.
If the Person Isn’t at the Facility
Before you travel, check the inmate roster to confirm the person is still in custody at Cleveland County. Use the inmate search guide for the direct roster link. If the person has been transferred, released, or moved to a different unit, staff can confirm when you call (704) 669-3001.
Special Circumstances
If you are traveling a long distance, have a medical accommodation need, or need to visit outside of the standard schedule, call (704) 669-3001 to ask whether any exceptions can be made. There is no published policy on special visits, so staff can tell you what options are available.
Attorneys and Clergy
Licensed attorneys and approved clergy typically have separate access outside of regular visiting hours. Contact the facility directly at (704) 669-3001 to arrange a professional visit and confirm required credentials.
