How TextBehind Works
TextBehind is a mail scanning and forwarding service operated by ViaPath Technologies, the same company behind GTL phone calls and GettingOut. Instead of mailing your letters directly to Fayetteville, you mail them to TextBehind’s facility in Phoenix, Maryland.
TextBehind receives your letter, scans it, and sends it digitally to Cumberland County Detention Center. The facility then delivers a printed or digital version to the person inside. This process allows faster inspection and reduces the volume of physical mail entering the jail.
The TextBehind system went into effect at Cumberland County Detention Center on June 26, 2023. Mail addressed to the physical facility address in Fayetteville for personal correspondence will not be handled the same way and may not reach the person.
The Two Address Types. Personal Mail vs. Legal Mail
Personal mail (letters, cards, photos, drawings):
Cumberland County Detention Center, NC
[Recipient Full Name] [GettingOut.com ID]
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
Legal mail and books:
[Recipient Full Name]
Cumberland County Detention Center
204 Gillespie Street
Fayetteville, NC 28301
Legal mail from attorneys, courts, and legal organizations goes directly to the facility. Books also go directly to Fayetteville, not to the TextBehind address.
The GettingOut.com ID is the most important piece of information for mailing through TextBehind. It is assigned by the GTL/ViaPath system and is how TextBehind matches your mail to the right person inside the facility.
The GettingOut.com ID is not the same as the Booking ID on the CCSO active inmate roster. These are two separate systems with two separate ID numbers. If you write the CCSO Booking ID on your mail instead of the GettingOut.com ID, TextBehind cannot route it and the mail will not be delivered.
How to get the GettingOut.com ID:
- Go to GettingOut.com.
- Search for the person by name and facility (Cumberland County Detention Center, NC).
- Find their profile. The ID shown in the GettingOut system is the number to use on the mail address.
If you are having trouble finding the ID online, email [email protected] for help.
Put the recipient’s full legal name and GettingOut.com ID on the same line, separated by a space. For example:
Cumberland County Detention Center, NC
Jane Marie Smith 123456
P.O. Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
Always include your full return address on the back of the envelope. If the mail cannot be delivered, TextBehind will return it to you. Without a return address, undeliverable mail is discarded.
What Types of Mail Are Accepted
Letters and cards. Standard letters on plain paper and greeting cards are accepted. Write in blue or black ink. Pencil is typically also accepted. Cards must be plain. No glitter, stickers, pop-up elements, or embedded materials that could conceal contraband.
Photos. Photos are accepted through TextBehind. Content rules include:
- No nudity or sexually explicit images
- No gang-related imagery, symbols, or colors
- No photos of weapons, drugs, or illegal activity
TextBehind scans photos digitally, so the person inside receives a digital or printed version of your photo, not the original.
Drawings and artwork. Drawings on standard paper are accepted. Follow the same content rules as photos.
What Is Not Accepted Through TextBehind
Do not send the following through the TextBehind mail address:
- Cash, checks, or money orders inside an envelope (see below for the correct way to send money)
- Nude, sexually explicit, or pornographic content
- Gang-related imagery
- Sexually explicit books or materials
Mail that violates these rules will be rejected and not forwarded to the facility.
Books. Different Rules Apply
Books are not processed through TextBehind. Send books directly to the facility address:
[Recipient Full Name]
Cumberland County Detention Center
204 Gillespie Street
Fayetteville, NC 28301
Books must be:
- Softback only. Hardback books are not accepted.
- Sent directly from the publisher or an approved vendor such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Books sent from a personal address are generally not accepted.
- Free of explicit content. No sexually explicit books.
Contact the facility at (910) 323-1500 or (910) 672-5630 to confirm book rules before sending.
Legal Mail. Direct to the Facility
Mail from attorneys, courts, and legal organizations goes directly to 204 Gillespie Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301. Mark the envelope clearly as legal mail. Use certified mail with a return receipt for any important legal documents so you have proof of delivery.
Legal mail is typically opened only in the presence of the person in custody, not during general inspection. If the person’s attorney needs to coordinate privileged mail handling, the attorney contacts the jail directly.
What Happens to Rejected Mail
If TextBehind rejects your mail (content violation, incorrect address, missing ID, etc.), it is returned to the address on your envelope. If you did not include a return address, the mail is discarded. Check your TextBehind account or contact [email protected] to find out the status of a piece of mail.
Sending Money: Use JailPackStore, Not the Mail
Do not put cash, checks, or money orders inside a personal letter envelope. This is not an accepted way to send money at Cumberland County Detention Center.
To send money for commissary, use JailPackStore at jailpackstore.com/store/index. See the send money guide for step-by-step instructions.
Processing Time
TextBehind typically processes mail within a few business days of receipt. Allow extra time for transit from your location to Phoenix, Maryland, plus the processing period. Mail takes longer than a phone call, but it is a way to share photos and longer written messages that phone calls cannot replace.
Staying in Touch Between Letters
Mail is one part of staying connected. Other options include:
Send Photos and Letters with Pigeonly
The easiest way to send photos and letters to someone at Cumberland County Detention Center is through Pigeonly. Upload your photos or write your letter online, and Pigeonly prints and mails everything to the facility for you, following the mail rules listed above.
