Wake County Detention Inmate Search. Find Someone with Police-2-Citizen

Confirm they are in custody and get the inmate ID number you need for everything else.

Overview

To find someone at Wake County Detention Center, use the Police-2-Citizen inmate search portal at wakeso.policetocitizen.com/Inmates. This is the official free lookup tool run by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. Search by name and confirm which facility is holding the person: either the main Hammond Road location or the Baker Public Safety Center downtown. Write down their inmate ID number because you need it for deposits, mail, and scheduling visits.

Quick Facts

  • Official tool: Police-2-Citizen portal at wakeso.policetocitizen.com/Inmates.
  • Operated by the Wake County Sheriff's Office. Free to use.
  • Search by first name and last name.
  • Results show the person's current facility: Hammond Road or Baker Public Safety Center.
  • Write down the inmate ID number: you need it for every deposit, every letter, and every visit request.
  • If someone was just booked, allow up to 24 hours for the record to appear.
  • Call (919) 773-7930 if you cannot find the person after 24 hours.

Go to wakeso.policetocitizen.com/Inmates. Enter the person’s first and last name and submit the search. The portal searches the Wake County detention roster across both facilities: the main detention center at 3301 Hammond Road and the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center at 330 S. Salisbury St. downtown.

You do not need to create an account or pay anything to search.

What the Search Shows

When a record comes back, you will typically see:

  • Full name: as recorded at booking
  • Current facility: Hammond Road or Baker Public Safety Center
  • Inmate ID number: this is the key number you need for everything
  • Booking information: may include charge details and bond status depending on what the portal displays

Write the inmate ID number down or take a photo of it. Every deposit at Access Corrections and every piece of personal mail you send requires this number. Missing it means your money or letter may not reach the right person.

Wake County Detention operates two locations:

  1. 3301 Hammond Road, Raleigh, NC 27610 (main facility, 1,574-bed combined capacity)
  2. 330 S. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27602 (John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center, satellite)

The Police-2-Citizen search covers both. When you find the person, note which location they are at. Mail uses the same P.O. Box regardless of which facility holds them, but legal mail uses different P.O. Boxes for each location. See the mail and photos guide for the full address breakdown.

All video visits take place at 3301 Hammond Road regardless of where the person is housed.

If You Cannot Find the Person

A few common reasons someone does not appear in the search:

  • Too soon after booking: Booking records can take up to 24 hours to appear. Try again the next day.
  • Transferred to another facility: If the person was sentenced and transferred to state prison, they will no longer appear in the Wake County system. Try the NC Department of Adult Correction offender search at https://webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do.
  • Released: If they were released on bond, released upon sentencing, or had charges dismissed, they will not appear.
  • Name variation: Try alternate spellings, a nickname, or just the last name.
  • Held under a different name: Court records sometimes differ from the name you know them by.

If you still cannot find them after 24 hours, call the Wake County Detention Center at (919) 773-7930. Staff can help confirm whether someone is in custody.

Why the Inmate ID Number Matters

Everything at Wake County Detention ties back to the inmate ID number:

  • Deposits: Access Corrections requires it to credit the right account.
  • Mail: Personal mail sent to P.O. Box 247 in Phoenix, MD must include the ID number or it may not be delivered.
  • Visit scheduling: When you call (919) 857-9103 to schedule a video visit, staff will ask for the person’s name and ID number.

Save the number somewhere easy to find. If you lose it, run another search on the Police-2-Citizen portal.

Confirming Before You Visit

Before you drive to 3301 Hammond Road for a scheduled video visit, run a quick search on the portal to confirm the person is still at Wake County. People can be transferred, released, or moved on short notice. A 60-second search can save you a wasted trip.

What This Search Does Not Show

The Police-2-Citizen portal shows current Wake County detention records. It does not show:

  • NC state prison records (use the NCDAC offender search for those)
  • Federal BOP records (use bop.gov/inmateloc for those)
  • Other county jail records
  • Historical booking records after release

If the person was sentenced to state time or federal time, they may have already left Wake County custody and be in the state or federal system.
