To find someone at Wake County Detention Center, use the Police-2-Citizen inmate search portal at wakeso.policetocitizen.com/Inmates. This is the official free lookup tool run by the Wake County Sheriff’s Office. Search by name and confirm which facility is holding the person: either the main Hammond Road location or the Baker Public Safety Center downtown. Write down their inmate ID number because you need it for deposits, mail, and scheduling visits.
Go to wakeso.policetocitizen.com/Inmates. Enter the person’s first and last name and submit the search. The portal searches the Wake County detention roster across both facilities: the main detention center at 3301 Hammond Road and the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center at 330 S. Salisbury St. downtown.
You do not need to create an account or pay anything to search.
When a record comes back, you will typically see:
Write the inmate ID number down or take a photo of it. Every deposit at Access Corrections and every piece of personal mail you send requires this number. Missing it means your money or letter may not reach the right person.
Wake County Detention operates two locations:
The Police-2-Citizen search covers both. When you find the person, note which location they are at. Mail uses the same P.O. Box regardless of which facility holds them, but legal mail uses different P.O. Boxes for each location. See the mail and photos guide for the full address breakdown.
All video visits take place at 3301 Hammond Road regardless of where the person is housed.
A few common reasons someone does not appear in the search:
If you still cannot find them after 24 hours, call the Wake County Detention Center at (919) 773-7930. Staff can help confirm whether someone is in custody.
Everything at Wake County Detention ties back to the inmate ID number:
Save the number somewhere easy to find. If you lose it, run another search on the Police-2-Citizen portal.
Before you drive to 3301 Hammond Road for a scheduled video visit, run a quick search on the portal to confirm the person is still at Wake County. People can be transferred, released, or moved on short notice. A 60-second search can save you a wasted trip.
The Police-2-Citizen portal shows current Wake County detention records. It does not show:
If the person was sentenced to state time or federal time, they may have already left Wake County custody and be in the state or federal system.
