What Is FCI Seagoville?

FCI Seagoville is a federal correctional institution for sentenced male offenders: not a pretrial jail.

Overview

FCI Seagoville is a low-security federal prison for adult male inmates, operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in the South Central Region. It holds sentenced offenders who have already been convicted and are serving their term. The facility is located about 15 miles east of downtown Dallas in Seagoville, Texas, and includes an adjacent minimum-security Satellite Camp.

History of FCI Seagoville

FCI Seagoville has an unusual history. The site was originally built in 1940 as a federal reformatory for women and was later converted to hold German and Japanese internees during World War II. After the war, it returned to use as a federal prison. It has operated as a male correctional facility since the 1970s.

Today, FCI Seagoville is one of the larger BOP facilities in Texas and serves as a significant hub for federal inmates in the Northern District.

Security Level and What It Means

FCI Seagoville is a low-security facility. In BOP terms, low-security means:

  • Inmates live in dormitory or cubicle housing (not individual cells)
  • Less restrictive movement within the facility compared to medium or high-security
  • Inmates generally have work assignments, programming, and more structured daily schedules
  • Lower risk of serious incident compared to medium or high-security facilities

This is a meaningful distinction for families. Low-security inmates have typically demonstrated lower risk profiles and often have shorter remaining sentences. Communication access (phone, mail, visitation) is standard at this level.

The adjacent Satellite Camp is minimum-security: the least restrictive level in the federal system. Camp inmates may have more programming access and outdoor time. See the Satellite Camp guide for details.

Programs at FCI Seagoville

FCI Seagoville offers several inmate programs, including:

  • RDAP (Residential Drug Abuse Program): A 9–12 month intensive treatment program for inmates with documented substance use disorders. Successful completion can reduce a sentence by up to 12 months under 18 U.S.C. 3621(e). This is a meaningful benefit: if your loved one qualifies and is participating, it can significantly change their projected release date.
  • Educational and vocational programs: GED preparation, adult literacy, vocational training
  • Work assignments: Most inmates have a work assignment contributing to facility operations
  • Religious and counseling services

Eligibility for specific programs depends on sentence length, custody level, and other factors assessed by the unit team.

What It Means for Families

Knowing FCI Seagoville is a low-security BOP facility tells you several things. Communication options follow standard BOP rules: phone calls through TRULINCS (300 min/month), text messaging via CorrLinks, physical mail and photos, visiting on Friday evenings and weekends. There are no restrictions beyond the standard BOP policies unless the inmate has an individual restriction for a disciplinary reason.

If the BOP locator shows “FCI SEAGOVILLE,” your loved one is in the main low-security compound. If it shows “FCI SEAGOVILLE CAMP,” they are at the minimum-security satellite unit on the same grounds: different visiting schedule, same communication rules.

What does FCI mean?

FCI stands for Federal Correctional Institution. It's a mid-range security level within the BOP system: above minimum security camps (FPC) but below medium and high-security facilities (USP). FCI Seagoville is a low-security FCI, meaning it sits at the lower end of the FCI range.

About
Q

Is FCI Seagoville a jail or a prison?

It's a federal prison: not a jail. Jails hold people pretrial or for short sentences (usually under a year). FCI Seagoville holds sentenced offenders who have been convicted and are serving a federal term, typically longer sentences. Everyone there has been through federal court.

About
Q

What is RDAP and does FCI Seagoville have it?

RDAP is the Residential Drug Abuse Program, a BOP-run intensive treatment program for inmates with documented substance use history. FCI Seagoville offers RDAP. Successful completion can earn a sentence reduction of up to 12 months under federal law (18 U.S.C. 3621(e)). Eligibility is determined by the BOP based on the inmate's history and sentence type.

About
Q

How does low security affect visiting and communication?

Low-security inmates at FCI Seagoville have standard BOP communication access: visiting on Friday evenings and Sat/Sun/Mon/Holidays, 300 phone minutes per month via TRULINCS, CorrLinks email, and regular mail. Communication access is not restricted by security level alone: individual disciplinary actions can affect access.
